18 Plants that May Harm Your House Pets

Having plants in your house is a great way to make it feel homey. But before you start to fill your home with plants and flowers, be aware of their effects on your pets. Be extra careful if your beloved pet likes to snack on plants. Also, be mindful of the plants growing outside of your home and in your yard. We know you can’t monitor your pets every second that you are outside with them, so it's helpful to know which plants contain toxins that are harmful to your pets. The best way to keep your pets safe from possible poison is to keep these plants out of your home and off of your property.

  1. Lilies are an extremely serious poisonous plant/flower and can be fatal to our sweet friends. Just eating one petal, drinking the water from the vase, and even ingesting the pollen can cause liver failure and death.
  2. Sago Palm is one of the most serious toxic plants that can cause death. The seeds are the most toxic, but the entire plant is poisonous. Likely symptoms include severe vomiting and diarrhea, liver damage and failure, and death.
  3. Azaleas are extremely toxic to our furry friends, and even a small taste can cause vomiting, diarrhea, nerve and muscle issues, paralysis, cardiac failure and even death.
  4. Castorbean/Castor Oil Plant is another plant that causes life threatening symptoms and even death, even when ingesting just small amounts. The entire plant is poisonous, but especially the seed/bean. It causes vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, seizures, coma, and death.
  5. Milkweed can cause severe issues if ingested, such as coma, seizures, kidney and liver failure, respiratory paralysis and death.
  6. Oleander is a highly toxic shrub in its entirety and causes colic, difficulty breathing, cardiac failure and death.

  9. Marijuana is a plant that causes an altered state of mind, lethargy, low blood pressure and body temperature, coma, seizures, and even death.

  11. Cyclamen are beautiful flowers that cause diarrhea, vomiting, seizures and death, especially if ingesting the root.
  12. Autumn Crocus is highly toxic and can lead to internal bleeding, liver and kidney damage, respiratory failure, seizures and death.
  13. Shamrock Plants can cause kidney failure, tremors and possibly death.

  18. Amaryllis bulbs are most toxic, and cause vomiting, diarrhea, and even tremors.
  19. Chrysanthemums can cause dermatitis, vomiting, diarrhea and incoordination.
  20. Mistletoe causes vomiting, diarrhea, low blood pressure, difficulty breathing and a low heart rate.
